Can you start to smell the lovely winter fresh air? Christmas is coming and we can’t wait! Liverpool and the Merseyside area is always a glorious place to be when the winter months arrive. The city comes alive with a booming atmosphere and there’s no shortage of fun activities.
Check out five of the best Christmas events in Merseyside this festive season…
1. Attend a Winter Concert at Sefton Park
Why not begin your festive celebrations at the Sefton Park Palm House? This dome-shaped Victorian building is one of the most stunning venues in the city and offers the perfect opportunity to absorb a lively atmosphere while surrounded by gorgeous scenery. The Palm House will play host to a Winter Concert on various dates throughout November and December. The two-hour event kicks off at 2PM in the afternoon and you will be able to listen to a selection of musical performances. Depending on the day you choose, acts will include the St Helen’s Concert Band, Serendipity and the Liverpool Show Choir as well as many more. The event is free but it’s recommended to arrive early as the venue will pack out quickly!
2. Don’t Miss the Annual Christmas Markets
Christmas isn’t complete until you’ve sampled one of the many annual markets! The Liverpool markets return to St George’s Hall plateau on November 16th and will remain open for around five weeks. Influenced by German culture, visitors can wander around more than 40 garland-covered wooden cabins which provide a range of festive offerings. There are a number of arts and craft items on show as well as gifts from across the globe. Don’t forget the delicious food that will be available, including bratwurst and gourmet burgers, all of which can be washed down with hot chocolate, beer or mulled wine! Pay the markets a visit and you and your family will get in the festive mood in no time.
3. Enter a Winter Wonderland at the Bombed Out Church
One of the city’s most famous landmarks will turn into a Winter Wonderland from the beginning of December. The Bombed Out Church on Leece Street will transform into a festive-themed landscape where you will be able to check out various activities to warm you up for Christmas. Brush up on your card-making and decorating skills at a workshop or even dress up a snow buddy. Kids can receive a gift and framed photo from Santa at the Grotto while parents will be treated with mulled wine and a mince pie. You can also attend a festival storytelling or a silent disco. Tickets are available to book now which will grant you access to a two-hour session.
4. Get Your Skates on at the Ice Festival
Don’t miss an opportunity to attend the annual Ice Festival! This event is located at the Pier Head and the Liverpool waterfront makes for a wonderful backdrop. Put your ice skating skills to the test and capture the moment with a selfie portrait. Skating aids will be on hand to help you glide smoothly. A selection of rides will be available here including a children’s rollercoaster, the Ice Jet ride which features an incredible sound and light show, and the longest ice slide in the UK. Don’t quite fancy putting your skates on? There’s still something for you including pop up markets and festive street food such as hot roast rolls and crepes. Head to the cosy lodge for a warm atmosphere and a selection of hot and cold beverages.
5. Visit an Event at One of the National Museums
The National Museums Liverpool will be getting involved in the Christmas spirit this year. Free events will be taking place throughout the festive period, offering a ton of family for the whole family. Kids can get their creative juices flowing at the See, Make, Do event while parents can perfect their wrapping skills at a crafting workshop. You will also be able to catch a choir performance and hear an original story written by a Titanic survivor.
